Abstract

Background and Objectives: App-based mindfulness intervention, as a novel approach, can play an effective role in improving cognitive and emotional processes associated with social anxiety. Accordingly, the present study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of this intervention in reducing rumination and improving emotion regulation among high school students with social anxiety.
Materials and Methods: This study was a semi-experimental research with a pre-test/post-test design and a control group. The statistical population included all female students aged 13–18 in the second secondary level in Saqqez during the 2025–2026 academic year. The sample consisted of 30 students who were identified using the La Greca Social Anxiety Scale (1998) and selected via purposive sampling. They were randomly assigned into two groups: experimental (n=15) and control (n=15). Data collection instruments included the La Greca Social Anxiety Scale (1998), the Gross and John Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (2003), and the Nolen-Hoeksema Ruminative Response Scale (1993). The experimental group received an 8-session mobile app-based mindfulness intervention, while the control group received no intervention during this period.
Results: The results showed that the app-based mindfulness intervention led to a significant reduction in rumination and a significant improvement in emotion regulation skills and social anxiety among adolescents with social anxiety (p < 0.05).
Conclusion: The findings indicated that an app-based mindfulness intervention plays an effective role in promoting the mental health of adolescents by reducing rumination, improving emotional regulation, and decreasing social anxiety; therefore, this approach is suggested as an efficient intervention for the prevention and treatment of social anxiety.
