Aims: Phubbing is the simultaneous use of social media and face-to-face interactions in adolescents, which causes psychological and social challenges. This study aimed to investigate the structural relationship pattern of the role of dark personality traits and negative emotionality in predicting phubbing through the mediation of social media addiction.
Materials and Methods: The present study was applied in terms of purpose and descriptive-correlational (structural equation modeling) in terms of method. The statistical population consisted of 180 male high school students in public schools in Ardebil in the academic year 2023, who were selected using convenience sampling. Data were collected using the Chutpitayasonvand et al.'s (2018) Phobbing Questionnaire, Turrell et al.'s (2012) Social Media Addiction Questionnaire, Johnson et al.'s (2010) Dark Personality Traits, and Waller et al.'s (1996) Negative Emotionality Questionnaire. Data analysis was performed with SPSS 25 and SmartPLS 3 software.
Findings: A total of 180 subjects with a mean age of 15.98 and a standard deviation of 1.00 participated in this study. The results indicated that the study had a good fit. The results showed that dark personality traits and negative emotionality had a direct and significant effect on phubbing (p<0.001), and the indirect effect of dark personality traits (β=0.21) and negative emotionality (β=0.18) on phubbing was confirmed through the mediation of social media addiction.
Conclusion: In general, based on the results, it is suggested that interventions aimed at modifying harmful personality traits, improving emotion regulation skills, and providing deeper media literacy training in adolescents be designed and implemented to prevent the occurrence and continuation of behaviors such as phubbing.
