Abstract

Aims: Substance abuse has always been associated with several problems in human life and is one of the most important social harm. The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of acceptance and commitment therapy on the perception of social support by family, friends and other important people in addicted people's lives.

Materials & Methods: This semi-experimental study was conducted among addicts who were referred to the leaving addiction camp of Hamyaran-e Salamat in Ardabil in 2018. Thirty subjects who had inclusion criteria to study were selected by random available sampling method and divided into experimental and control groups. The perceived social support scale was used to collect data. The experimental group received 90-minute sessions of acceptance and commitment therapy, twice a week for 4 weeks. Data were analyzed by SPSS 22 software using multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA).

Findings: The difference of the post-test scores between the experimental and the control groups was significant in the perceived social support by family (F=7.782; p<0.01) and perceived social support by friends (F=34.276; p<0.01), but no significant effect was found on perceived social support by others (F=0.998; p=0.327).

Conclusion: Intervention based on acceptance and commitment therapy increases perceived social support by family and friends of addicts.
