Aims: Given the increasing signs of emotional divorce among women and the influential role of individual and relational factors in its formation, this study aimed to investigate the relationship between differentiation of self and psychological security with emotional divorce among women in Tabriz, considering the mediating role of conflict resolution strategies.
Materials and Methods: The present study was a descriptive correlational research utilizing Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). The statistical population included all women visiting counseling centers in Tabriz in the year 1403 (2024-2025). The statistical sample consisted of 250 women selected from these centers, who responded to the Differentiation of Self Inventory (DSI) by Skowron & Friedlander (1998), Maslow’s Security-Insecurity Inventory (PSS, 1952), the Emotional Divorce Questionnaire (EDQ) by Gottman et al. (2000), and the Rahim Organizational Conflict Inventory-II (ROCI-II). The collected data were analyzed using SEM and SPSS and AMOS software.
Findings: Descriptive demographic findings showed that the highest frequency belonged to the 31-40 age group (n=140, 56%), 150 participants (60%) held a bachelor’s degree, the majority of the sample (58%) had a marriage duration of 5 to 15 years, and 155 participants (62%) were housewives while 95 (38%) were employed. The results of the SEM analysis indicated that differentiation of self (-0.391), psychological security (-0.410), and conflict resolution strategies (-0.263) have a significant relationship with emotional divorce. Conflict resolution strategies had a direct relationship with emotional divorce, and psychological security was significantly related to conflict resolution strategies (p<0.05). Furthermore, conflict resolution strategies played a mediating role in the relationship between differentiation of self and psychological security with emotional divorce, and the overall research model demonstrated a good fit (p<0.05).
Conclusion: It can be concluded that the higher the level of differentiation of self and psychological security in couples, the better their conflict resolution strategies will be, which subsequently leads to a reduction in emotional divorce.
