ABSTRACT
Aims: Suicide is considered one of the most important indicators of mental health in a society, which is caused by multiple factors. The present study aimed to predict suicidal thoughts based on internalized shame, cognitive avoidance, and feelings of loneliness in married women in Bukan city.
Materials and Methods: The research method was descriptive and correlational. The statistical population included all married women in Bukan city in 2024, and 381 people were selected as the sample size using the available sampling method and based on the Krejcie and Morgan table. The research tools included Beck et al. 's suicidal ideation questionnaire (1984), Cook's internalized shame (1993), Sexton and Dugas' cognitive avoidance (2004), and Russell et al. 's loneliness questionnaire (1996). The data were analyzed using Pearson's correlation coefficient and multivariate linear regression using SPSS 24 software.
Findings: Demographic findings showed that 83 (22.1%) of the participants were in the age range of 20 to 25 years, 155 (41.3%) were in the age range of 26 to 30 years, 88 (23.5%) were in the age range of 31 to 35 years, and 49 (13.1%) were in the age range of 36 to 40 years. The results of data analysis showed that there was a positive and significant relationship between internalized shame, cognitive avoidance, and loneliness with suicidal thoughts (F=472.033, P<0.001). Also, the results of regression analysis showed that the components of shyness with beta 0.162, self-esteem with beta -0.209, thought suppression with beta 0.258, thought substitution with beta 0.308, distraction with beta 0.264, situational avoidance with beta 0.150, mental imagery change with beta 0.243, and loneliness with beta 0.291 had the power to predict suicidal thoughts (P<0.001).
Conclusion: Internalized shame, cognitive avoidance, and loneliness are psychological factors that influence the prediction of suicidal thoughts as well as their formation and persistence in women.
