This article examines the importance of cognitive screening and evaluation for elderly drivers in the process of renewing their driving licenses. With the growing elderly population in both Iran and worldwide, ensuring the driving safety of this group has become a critical issue, as the natural decline in cognitive abilities with age can negatively affect driving performance. In this regard, many countries have implemented mandatory medical examinations and conditional licensing systems to address this challenge. However, in Iran, there is no systematic framework for cognitive screening of elderly drivers yet. Findings from various studies indicate that: (1) cognitive decline, particularly in processing speed, selective attention, planning, and cognitive flexibility, is most strongly associated with traffic violations among elderly drivers; (2) regular cognitive assessments can help reduce accidents and improve driving safety; (3) localizing cognitive screening methods and conducting national studies to adapt these approaches to Iran's cultural and social conditions is essential; and (4) developing alternative transportation options for elderly individuals who are no longer able to drive safely can enhance community safety while maintaining their independence.
